R49 Sinusitis, nasal congestion

Indications

Acute and chronic catarrh of the nose and maxillary sinus; sinusitis; polyp formation in children; lack or loss of olfaction and taste.

 Mode of action

Arsenicum album: During acute sinusitis, symptoms are relieved by cold; in chronic conditions, pains are burning in quality and are ameliorated by heat; right-sided coryza; watery, acrid nasal discharge which obstructs the nose.

Calcium carbonicum Hahnemanni: Mucosal swellings; nasal polypi which are non-hemorrhagic, and composed of mucus; cervical adenopathy; chronic nasal obstruction.

Cinnabaris: Catarrh of the maxillary sinuses.

Kalium bichromicum: Pain, heaviness at the root of the nose; sinus headache; acute and chronic sinusitis; nasal discharge or post-nasal discharge is thick, purulent, yellow, and stringy; strong nasal quality of the voice, nasal polyps.

Mercurius solubilis Hahnemanni: Inflammation of the mucosa, with a tendency to suppuration; yellow-green, irritating, corrosive, foul-smelling discharges. General aggravation at night and from both heat and cold; night sweats.

Pulsatilla: Hay fever, coryza, sneezing; bland greenish nasal discharge; chronic nasal obstruction; symptoms are generally worse in a warm room, better from open air, involvement of the frontal and right maxillary sinus.

Sepia: Rhinitis; sinusitis with nauseating, yellow post-nasal discharge.

Sulfur: Sinusitis with chronic, purulent nasal discharge; hay fever; nasal polyps; great sensitivity to odours.

Remedies to be considered

  • Complementary product: BC-5
  • During or following influenza: R6 additionally, BC-5, BC-6
  • Cough: R8, R9 or R9 JUNIOR, BC-6
  • Pleurisy and intercostal neuralgia: R24
  • Hoarseness and catarrh of the larynx: R45, BC-10
  • Food allergies: BIO 83, with nasal and respiratory mucosal involvement: R97
  • Inhalant allergies: BIO 84, with nasal and respiratory mucosal involvement: R97
  • Mucosal inflammation of the nose: R183, BC-5

Clinical experience

  • Acutely, R96 Pulsatilla Compositum nasal spray is also a consideration.
  • If formation of polyps, consider R17.
  • Acutely, administer on an as needed basis.
  • As a chronic remedy, expect 1 month of treatment for each year of ailment.

Ingredients | Drops

Arsenicum album D12 1 g, Calcium carbonicum Hahnemanni D30 1 g, Cinnabaris D12 1 g, Kalium bichromicum D12 1 g, Mercurius solubilis Hahnemanni D30 1 g, Pulsatilla D12 1 g, Sepia D12 1 g, Sulfur D30 1 g.

Non-medicinal ingredients: ethanol, purified water.

Dosage 

Adults and children 12 years and older 5-10 drops 1-3 times per day, acute cases 4-6  times per day in a little water or undiluted or as directed by a health care practitioner.

Known adverse reactions

  • In rare cases, hypersalivation may occur after use, in which case the product should be discontinued.

  • In very rare cases, skin reactions may occur after use, in which case the product should be discontinued.
