R61 Rheumatic ointment: lumbago, sciatica (topical)
Indications
Lumbago; backache due to degenerative rheumatic processes such as chondritis, osteochondritis, and osteoarthritis; muscular rheumatism (fibrositis). Ankylosing spondylitis; cervical and lumbar facet syndrome; brachialgia; intercostal neuralgia; sciatica. Chronic rheumatic inflammation of the tendons, ligaments, or joints.
Mode of action
The individual remedies are potentized in Oleum pini silvestris; this allows for greater surface area coverage and better absorption of the remedies through the skin.
Berberis vulgaris: Low back pain and sciatica with sudden, sharp pains radiating downwards into the posterior thigh. Arthritis and gout with tearing, stitching pains which radiate. Acidic urine with urinary sediment.
Camphora: Rheumatic pain between shoulders. Difficult motion. Numbness, tingling and coldness. Cracking in joints. Cramps in calves. Icy cold feet, ache as if sprained.
Dulcamara: Neuralgic rheumatism of the limbs and articulations causing weakness and rigidity; shivering in the sacral region. Pains which are aggravated by a change of weather and in cold, damp weather. Relief is obtained by warm applications. Rheumatic – gouty constitutions, often predisposed to by sitting on cold surfaces.
Nux vomica: Back pain worse at night, worse turning in bed, must rise to turn, worse sitting upright; rheumatism of the dorsal muscles following chills, aggravated by cold and worse in the morning.
Oleum gaultheriae: Neuralgia, rheumatism, sciatica.
Rhododendron: Rheumatism especially of the small joints. Aggravation of symptoms before storms or from barometric changes; pain is better with motion and the application of heat.
Rhus toxicodendron: General aggravation of symptoms from becoming wet and before cold, damp weather. Symptoms are aggravated by rest and immobility. Better by motion and by the application of heat; rheumatic and neuralgic complaints.
Remedies to be considered
Concurrent remedy: R11 administered orally.
For external use only. Avoid all contact with the eyes or open wounds. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. The additional application of heat may cause irritation or burns. Keep out of the reach of children.
Clinical experience
Do not apply to open wounds.
Ingredients
Berberis vulgaris Ø 0,1 g, Camphora D3 1,0 g, Dulcamara D1 0,1 g, Oleum gaultheriae D1 3,5 g, Rhododendron D6 0,1 g, Rhus toxicodendron D12 0,1 g.
Non-medicinal ingredients: (C16-C18) Alkyl alcohol, lanolin alcohol, petrolatum, lavender oil.
Dosage
Adults and children (ages 12 and up) apply ointment over the affected area 2-3 times daily or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.
